Roatan Port: Out of all the ports I have visited, this has been by far one of the best. Roatan is clean, beautiful, and easy to navigate. The scenery is top tier and the epitome of the tropics. Crystal clear green waters, white sands with lots of shells and coral, luscious trees, and abundant wildlife. The locals are friendly and helpful, very lovely people. My overall rating of Roatan would be a 9.5/10. A wonderful place to visit and highly recommended.
Free beach: Mahogany Beach is a short 5–10-minute walk from the terminal along a beautiful shaded and paved walkway. Lots of vegetation, flowers, and wildlife make for a scenic and interactive route. There is also an optional nature trail where you can walk through the trees on a dirt path. Once you get to the beach there are a few stores to look around in with a variety of beach wear, souvenirs, and wood carvings. The beach is full of white sands and beach chairs. Covered beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent. There are two restaurants right on the beach to provide a fun food experience. You can choose between Hurricane Hole or Fat Tuesday’s. There are several clean and accessible bathrooms. There are also outdoor showers to wash away the sand and ocean.
Cheap opportunity: An easy and cheap excursion is the all-day $15 chair lift. This chair lift transports you in between the port and Mahogany Beach. This is a great opportunity for those not wanting to make the trek to and from the beach. You are transported high above the trees and take in a breathtaking view of the bay, forest, oceans, and ship. A cheap and exciting excursion if you want to stay close to the ships or avoid spending a larger amount of money.
Shopping: Like Cozumel, Mexico’s port you are in a closed in shopping area right off the cruise ship. There are several chain stores you will commonly see in the Caribbean like Priana Joes, Diamonds International, and Del Sol. Diamonds International will often run specials of a free charm in each port. Del Sol is a neat store to explore. They offer color changing clothes and accessories that are UV ray activated. A neat option for the children or a unique souvenir. Harley Davidson riders should check out the Roatan store for pirate and beach themed Harley gear. There is also a surplus of local souvenir shops and a small market. There are lots of leather and wood shops to browse in. If you’re looking for any beachwear you may have forgotten there are plenty of options for sale.
Food: I tried Espresso Americano, a local coffee company that brews Honduran coffee. If you are a fan of the Frappuccino, try a mochaccino from this shop. It was delicious. They also have a variety of non-coffee options. Perfect stop for coffee lovers and non-coffee lovers alike. Stop by the Roatan Chocolate Company’s stall and taste the locally made chocolate. Honduran milk chocolate is described as rich enough to be American dark chocolate. Honduran dark chocolate is very rich and considered bitter to American taste buds. I tried Honduran dark sea salt chocolate and agree it tastes very bitter, but delicious. I also sampled Honduran milk chocolate with cashews in it and bought some of this one. It tastes amazing. Enjoy a locally made rum cake from Roatan Rum Company. I sampled the Tropical Spiced Rum Cake and bought one to take home. These moist and well spiced cakes are a must try. For the aesthetic or a taste of the tropics, there are several stands that offer coconut water straight from the coconut. Cute photo op or to try real coconut water straight from the source.
